Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have an increased risk for incident and premature acute arterial events. Study in @AGA_CGH #gastroenterology #GItwitter @QuazimAlayo @EdwardLoftus2 @AndresYarur @dmalvara3 @CiorbaGI @p_deepakibdmd fal.cn/3smeq
Inflammatory Bowel Disease is associated with an Increased Risk of Incident Acute Arterial Events: Analysis of the UK Biobank pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36075499/ @AGA_CGH @QuazimAlayo @P_DeepakIBDMD @CiorbaGI
6/6 Implications for patient care ➡️ Association between a quantifiable marker of inflammation & disease severity with risk of AAE, highlights AAE (incl. premature AAE) as important EIM of #IBD even in younger pts & importance of effective inflammation control to reduce this EIM
5/6 ➡️ Adjusted for traditional risk factors, independent, quantifiable association shown between inflammation & disease severity with AAE ➡️hs-CRP levels (highest vs lowest quartile) & AAE risk, aHR, 1.54; CI, 1.09–2.17 ➡️Disease severity & AAE risk: aHR, 5.40; CI, 4.03–7.22
4/6 ➡️We also assessed risk of premature AAEs (age <55 males and <65 females) ➡️3,129 with IBD matched to 12,516 controls without IBD ➡️IBD had higher incidence rate (406.8 vs 326.1 per 100,000 PY) & risk of composite premature AAEs ( IRR 1.41; 95% CI, 1.14 –1.75, p = 0.001)
3/6 ➡️ 455,950 UKB participants ➡️ 5,094 IBD matched to 20,376 non-IBD controls ➡️ Median follow-up of 12.4 years ➡️ IBD had higher incident rate of AAE (924.1 vs 730.9 per 100,000 person-years, p<0.001) ➡️ IBD higher risk of all AAEs (aHR, 1.19; CI, 1.08-1.31; P<0.001)
2/6 ➡️Population-based studies have suggested an ⬆️ risk of acute arterial events (AAEs) in #IBD ➡️Quantifiable relationship between systemic inflammation & risk of AAEs in IBD unclear ➡️ Novel: adjusted for diet, physical activity & hs-CRP in #IBD & non-IBD controls @uk_biobank
Excited to share our latest publication 👇🏻. Work done during my @IbdWustl fellowship year, under the mentorship of the wonderful @P_DeepakIBDMD With support from @CiorbaGI @EdwardLoftus2 @AndresYarur @dmalvara3 and #LisadelasFuentes. @WUGastro @AGA_CGH

Congratulations to UCSF's @MikeKattahMD on making @BeckersASC's #Gastroenterologists to Know list for 2022! His research focuses on why people develop inflammatory bowel disease (#IBD) and how to choose the best medications for each patient. ucsfh.org/3BTMAzb

I am trying to imagine the scene in America right now if the CDC said: "Okay, everyone, masks back on" and Joe Biden said "we're going to overturn the overturning of the mandate." There are limits to what public policy can do.
This is the current CDC US transmission map. 95% of the country has high of substantial spread, and our hospitalizations continue to rise. Why is CDC silent? The entire country should be urged to mask inside public places. There should be mandatory masks in airports and planes.
Appreciate the opportunity to present our work at the IBDXceed Research & Mentoring Meeting. Thanks to all the faculty @UmaMahadevanIBD @IBDMD @MLongMD @Hherf for the IBDXceed sessions throughout the year. Grateful to @P_DeepakIBDMD & @CiorbaGI for their mentorship & support!
Six great presentations from our AIBD fellows. The last one here by @QuazimAlayo on arterial events in IBD. So much talent studying IBD!
