I got asked by a friend to recommend a school for a highly gifted, but twice-exceptional student. As a rule, I don't recommend one school over any other, but I know the questions to ask... A thread. 🧵1/10

Yep, so I'm done with Twitter. If you're looking for an occasional "tweet" about gifted education or debating or something completely different. I am "smarterthanme" on bsky and threads. Haven't figured out which one is good yet.

Leaving Twitter. Having a very much unwanted tweet rammed down my notifications was the final straw.

Actually the problem with school discipline generally.

Yesterday I had a kid who would not get off the phone. They asked us to really enforce the cell phone policy this year, and when I told her to put the phone away she thew a fit and stormed out of the room. The consequence was she got to sit in the office and play on her phone

I think (most) teachers do an amazing job with what they have, but as a former ‘well behaved’ and academic student, I do wish we weren’t repeatedly sat next to kids who muck about and distract others in the hope of benefitting their learning. It often took the joy out of mine.

Typical anecdote driven reporting. Thanks @ktibus for alerting me. The article tells the story of one kid who was apparently unfairly suspended after… checks notes… “hitting and kicking two teacher aides” 1/10 abc.net.au/news/2024-09-2…

Suspensions and exclusions are up. Everyone says: 'This is awful. Govt, schools, teachers need to do more!' My response: 'This is awful. Behaviour needs to change. Tolerance of violence and abuse can't continue to increase. Students can't be taught that things that aren't ok…

Math is amazing, and it is ongoing. Here's a solution to a little 100 year-old stumper.

Am I being hibeamed by every second car when driving in suburban Sydney roads at night, or am I having some sort of episode?

I give you Danny Trejo, world treasure.

I have spent the last 4 days with the worst flu that I've had in memory (not as bad as COVID). Missed SDD's and missing tomorrow (at least) as well. At least I have a great casual teacher on my class for tomorrow. I'm very sorry I won't be there to meet my students.

18 of my exstudents are on the HSC merit lists somewhere!

Screaming internally.

I love a timid country A land of scare campaigns Where mindless bogan slogans Just overtake our brains The stunted, short horizons Of those who will not see Who, presented with alternatives Think only: me, me, me.

🤦

Labour has pledged to bring in ‘supervised toothbrushing at schools’ if it wins the next election. The responsibility for tasks such as these continues to pass onto the shoulders of the classroom teacher and away from parents/society. It’s ok, teachers can do it. But they can’t…

Just ran a camp for 122 primary school debaters across 3 days & 2 nights. The highlight: being woken up at 2:30am-ish by representatives from a cabin because it was morning and time to debate. Had to debate for 30 min about what time is actually an appropriate time to debate.

Hey @UberEats, you *KEEP* delivering to the house in the street behind ours. Could you please get your guys to at least knock on the door or something so that they know they've delivered it to the right place? *PLEASE*?

Absolutely perfect picture of the problem with the modern ALP. 10/10 no notes
