Excited for this roundtable on Saturday!
I am re-re-reading Beyerchen's Clausewitz, Nonlinearity, and the Unpredictability of War (which I came to know thanks to my colleague @NinaSilove). It is a truly brilliant essay, in so many ways. Also if you aren't necessarily interested in Clausewitz. jstor.org/stable/2539130
.@NinaSilove has documented that the Bush administration initially sought to prioritize Asia. The 9/11 terrorist attacks happened just five months after Secretary Rumsfeld wrote his memo, changing the focus of U.S. foreign policy in lasting ways. direct.mit.edu/isec/article-a… [4/5]
My favorite event of the year.
🎉 Euro-SWAMOS 2023 starts this Sunday! Get ready to discuss the most pressing issues in #defence and #security policies! Check the final schedule!👇 See you soon in Berlin! #EISS #securitystudies #Europe #summerschool @Hertie_Security | eiss-europa.com/euroswamos.html
"One looks in vain for chairs for defense or military science or for the role of the intelligence services at the freely accessible universities." This applies pretty much across Europe. Guess why over the past 15 months we have had many useless debates.

Putting these on my reading list (any additional suggestions on this topic welcome).

A taste of what it is like to share an office with @Mauro_Gilli -- and why we teach @CSS_ETHZurich not just about strategy but also military technology.
Last night I read the Seymour Hersch's piece. I am probably late to the party and I am sure much more competent people than me have already take a stab at it, but here I wrote down a couple of points about the part on the activation of underwater mines.
CSS at Swiss Political Science Association Congress: @NinaSilove on strategic planning; @BaraCorinne on ceasefires & violence against civilians; @EnzoNussio on victimization & punishment violence; @AllardDuursma on coercive mediation in civil wars.
European Summer Workshop on Analysis of Military Operations and Strategy. Learned a lot, met great people.
The first #EuroSWAMOS @thehertieschool was a great success. Check out the video to learn more about it👇. Thanks to all the great participants, and in particular to the organizers @mephenke @Mauro_Gilli @Hg_Meijer, and the @EISSnetwork for the support.
Glad our Report on the current and future challenges for @NATO is published just before the #madridsummit & new #strategicconcept. Lot of work, started long time ago, but really happy of the results. Beside the co-authors, dozens of ppl to thank. ndc.nato.int/news/news.php?…
Strongly agree
Here at @CSS_Zurich of @ETH we have an opening for a Senior Researcher focusing on Technology, Economics, and International Security. All you need to know, is that this is the best position you can find. jobs.ethz.ch/job/view/JOPG_…
Just finished listening to @NinaSilove present her book project on grand strategic planning, and it looks super exciting! Definitely worth following for anyone interested in US security policy - just sad it wasn’t out when I was doing my master’s.
🤣I’m quite annoyed that I didn’t think of this joke myself @james_acton32 But we have a Plan B! My visit will be rescheduled. 🙂
If a seminar about the value of planning—but the worthlessnesses of plans—is canceled, is that ironic?
