What do arms for Ukraine and publications about Lesia Ukrainka in English have in common? They are never enough! Read my new piece in @BylineTimes about Lesia Ukrainka putting the idea of a great Russian culture to a great test. bylinesupplement.com/p/lesia-ukrain…

Last week I had translations of two Ukrainian writers published: Maik Yohansen, killed by Russia 1937 Victoria Amelina, killed by Russia 2023 My last message from Victoria was about a reference in her poem to another poet I've translated, Vasyl Stus, killed by Russia 1985. 1/4

When Victoria Amelina spoke at @UCLSSEES in April, she'd just written a poem about her experiences talking to women and documenting Russian war crimes in de-occupied areas. Here's a video of her reading the original; my translation is below. So painful to listen to this now. 1/2

It was Victoria’s last post. Ukraine’s best literary voices, a brave person, a dear friend and a loving mother died yesterday after a russian missile attack on Kramatorsk on 27 June. She was severely injured and doctors were helpless. It is a loss for Ukraine and the world.

It's me in this picture. I'm a Ukrainian writer. I have portraits of great Ukrainian poets on my bag. I look like I should be taking pictures of books, art, and my little son. But I document Russia's war crimes and listen to the sound of shelling, not poems. Why? #StopRussiaNow

Victoria was documenting war crimes perpetrated by the Russians. She was killed in yet another such war crime. We bear witness to her death and that of thousands killed in Ukraine. Our witnessing must come with the responsibility to ensure justice. RIP. pen.org.ua/en/ne-stalo-vi…

Spoke with @_EmmaGH about the heritage of 🇺🇦 artist Polina Raiko and her house was ruined because of the Kakhovka catastrophe. Museums were looted, heritage destroyed, and important figures for 🇺🇦 culture like Vyacheslav Mashitsky still missing... theguardian.com/world/2023/jun…

First, the museum in Ivankiv with Maria Prymachenko works destroyed last year; now the house of another important folk artist Polina Raiko might be destroyed by the flood. I wrote about an imminent threat to the Polina Raiko's house some time ago 5harfliler.com/works-by-major…

It’s under the water already…

The house-museum of 🇺🇦 naive artist Polina Raiko in the city of Oleshki, in the Kherson region, may be under threat of destruction due to the explosion of the Kakhovskaya HPP that russia did today. The worst technogenic catastrophes since Chornobyl.

Staff of @UCLSSEES have resigned from @ucu over the motion which would see Ukraine left defenceless in the face of Russia’s genocidal war. The union’s professed indifference & ignorance about the fight Ukrainians for the right to exist over the past 15 months has been outrageous.

As @UCU members & ex-members from @UCLSSEES, the UK’s largest centre for the study of Ukraine, Eastern Europe & Russia, we condemn Congress Motion 5’s misrepresentation of the war & UCU’s reluctance to support Ukraine. Please read & share our open letter @DrJoGrady @UCL_UCU

We, @UCL_UCU members at @UCLSSEES (@SSEESstrikes), condemn @ucu's morbid & repulsive anti-Ukraine motion. I already resigned as did other colleagues. Some remain in "through gritted teeth". Now let's build momentum to rejoin a real @ucu reclaimed from tankies and genocide-deniers

Two autoportraits: Fedir Krychevsky, and Tetiana Yablonska. Master and student. He made his portrait in 1924, after war between the Ukrainian people's republic and the bolsheviks. She made it in 1946 after WW2, and year before, Krychevsky died of starvation, repressed by soviets
