Brilliant ideas emerge when different fields intersect. My ‘Genius’ list captures the best minds on X. twitter.com/i/lists/133502…
Fascinating read from @NateSilver538 on psychological profiles between Rs and Ds and response to disagreement. It's consistent with public opinion data about speech and social media behavior
peter thiel: ai will make verbal skills more valuable than math in society
Last night, Polymarket proved the wisdom of markets over the polls, the media, and the pundits. Polymarket consistently and accurately forecasted outcomes well ahead of all three, demonstrating the power of high volume, deeply liquid prediction markets like those pioneered by…
The internet is rotting and what goes online is not necessarily forever. Already more than a third of webpages from 2013 cannot be accessed, and with archives disappearing, mountains of content will be completely lost.
Internet Archive has not been archiving since 10/8. Google Cache has stopped caching. The Alexa service - the one that used to rank web traffic (not the Amazon virtual assistant) is gone. The ability of censors to memory-hole the internet is growing. brownstone.org/articles/they-…
The internet is no longer forever. You need to become your own archivist for whatever you are passionate about, because at some point this decade there is going to be a major purge and I strongly suspect >80% of global digital content will simply disappear.

Personal Introductions Only — How AI is raising barriers in Silicon Valley, not lowering them… and stratifying society and class not flattening it.
The most surreal aspect of the WFH vs. in-office debate is how it’s widely acknowledged that hundreds of millions of people do very little all day every day and yet the economy continues to just churn & those who don’t have the magic piece of paper work very hard for very little.
I regret to inform you that personal growth rarely comes from acquiring new knowledge and always from periods of intense humility (i.e. your ego finally relenting)
The vector of development that the internet and society is traveling leads away from extraordinary people sharing unique beliefs, and toward a tyranny of mediocrity. It is a preference for "normal" so strong that it extinguishes excellence; a ruthless allegiance to the average.
Being politically partisan makes you stupid. If someone you perceive as being on the other side says something reasonable, you either have to argue against it (and thus be unreasonable) or misinterpret it (and thus be obtuse).
Social approval is the enemy of clear thinking.
I made the closed-source vs. open-weight models figure for this moment.
GPT-2.
Now that the world has access to a GPT4 level model completely open source, we will see that the fear mongering AI p(doom)ers were wrong again about the supposedly existential risk of these models.
This fits into my paradigm that culture beats policy more often than not, even when policy is very strong. Many ppl won't like the results of this study. Change ain't easy and is seldom executed via government mandates.
Extremely interesting: Huge & comprehensive study on the impacts of cash transfers (UBI) in the US finds almost no impact on everything tested - Work, Education, Health 😔. They gave 1,000 low income people in IL and TX $1,000/mo for 3 years, & gave a control group $50/mo...…
The maths you said you don't use, they use it
how do they even install these in the middle of the freaking ocean ..
Recently I’ve gotten a lot of inbound from new grads asking for career advice, so I wrote down a list of things I wish I’d internalized sooner. The key thing: being precocious has an expiration date. Threading the note in its entirety:
Countless blogs have gone dark, DatPiff is gone, and now MTV News (that goes back over 25 years and has important historical info across all genres) has pulled the plug. “The internet is forever” is a myth
The Internet is rotting. The destruction of MTV news is the latest. Over 25% of the links embedded in New York Tunes articles just seven years ago & 60% of older links, are now broken. It isn’t good that the only people preserving decades of digital data is the Internet Archive.
So, mtvnews.com no longer exists. Eight years of my life are gone without a trace. All because it didn't fit some executives' bottom lines. Infuriating is too small a word
