This is so important!! We need to understand where kelp-derived #DOC ends up, as >50% of kelp carbon sequestration is estimated to occur through the DOC pathway. But once it is consumed by microbes, how much is respired vs. enters the food web vs. sinks? 🌊

Preliminary results from my May 2022 kelp dissolved organic carbon experiment show as little as 5% of the DOC released by kelp remaining after 150 days of microbial consumption. There’s way too much variability to issue Blue Carbon credits on assumed averages (e.g. 30%).

Bull kelp is a fast-growing algae that creates complex three-dimensional habitat. These underwater forests have carbon-sequestering superpowers, and provide food and shelter to numerous Salish Sea species. #bullkelp #seaweed #kelpforest #oceanart #watercolor

Washington state is home to 22 species of kelp; there are more kelp species here than anywhere in the world except Japan. Unfortunately, kelp beds have been disappearing for the last 40 years, but now there's a plan to help save kelp in Puget Sound. makingwaves.psp.wa.gov/index.php/2020…

In some parts of the Salish Sea, kelp forests have declined by as much as 80% in the last 50 years. Researchers from @SFU are working with the Pacific Salmon Foundation to preserve the genetic diversity of kelp by developing a new seed preservation technique and #kelp biobank.
