It’s interesting to see when journalists lean into “objectivity” and when those commitments fall away. I’ve consumed a lot of media regarding protests in recent weeks and one of the most striking bits has been the near-universal willingness to speak derisively about protestors.
“I do question how much the university administration understands the concept of free speech,” says @USC journalism professor @afuahirsch “The point of free speech is that people have the right to say things that you might find uncomfortable or inconvenient,” she tells me.

Furious that not only is UCLA not protecting our students, the statement from the Communications office suggested that the protestors were responsible for this violence. These are OUR STUDENTS, the reason we’re all here.
Out of concern for the safety of the @USC community, the general public, and in the interest of fiscal prudence, we urge the @USC Administration to refrain from using police to suppress peaceful student protest. @PresidentFolt: Students’ right to free speech must be protected.
