Excellent history of evol anthropology as it relates to human behavior and culture. The take home point is that both human behavioral ecology and evolutionary psychology need to account for culture per se more effectively and intergratively. Open access: pnas.org/doi/epub/10.10…

Terry Gross' old interview with Quincy Jones (passed yesterday at 91). Amazing stories about his early life such as becoming best friends with Ray Charles when he was 14 and Charles 16. Really funny and poignant. What a life and what a talent. npr.org/2024/11/05/g-s…

Unclear why the reporter is mystified why the series went to its second season. The obvious answer is that it is profitable.

I came to the end of a MS I was asked to review. The final sentence said "data entry and cleaning is underway and we expect to complete by etc..." I never encountered this before. The letter asking for a review made no mention the MS was incomplete. Anyone else experience this?

Part one of an account of hominin cannibalism. Nicely presented and comprehensive. It gets a little contestable towards the end with weak speculations. Still worthwhile. Part two is forthcoming. youtu.be/9MWSnjNpR8I?si…

Back to compensation for scholarly manuscript reviews. Just received a review request from a Wiley journal. I get a 30% discount towards the purchase of their books. Unsure what that means. Regardless, not nearly good enough! A pittance. Next to nothing.

Thought of the day: scientific journals exploit reviewers. It takes me about half-a-day of work to do a good review and sometimes more with SOM's. A tiny step in the right direction would be to compensate reviewers with a gratis two year subscription to the journal. Thoughts?

Just finished a blind review. Given the material, topic, and citations, I was pretty sure of the author. The confirmation came in the acknowledgement section noting a travel grant to ZZ (initials). Circumstances given, there is no easy solution.
