Uganda has thrown ICJ’s Judge Sebutinde, who voted against emergency measures requested by South Africa against Israel over its war on Gaza, under the bus. The timing was awful for President Yoweri Museveni who just hosted the Non-Aligned Movement [and G77+ China] and taken over…
🚨Hi everyone, there is an #arbovirus meeting on next week featuring some fantastic science and good presenters, organised by Andres Merits. It's a hybrid meeting that is on location 🇪🇪, or accessed by zoom. Highly recommended!🚨
Great opportunity to attend #arbovirus conference for free NEXT WEEK Mon/Tues online. #replication #vector #immunity #pathogenesis #evolution #antivirals Fantastic line up of researchers presenting - see below Register here: forms.gle/9Va9AYwMNhKoNa… Organised by Andres Merits

Very interesting analyses about the virology of #Omicron, which may explain the faster spread of this variant. According to a new lab study, Omicron infects & multiplies ~70x faster than the Delta variant and the wild type SARS-CoV-2 in the human bronchus, but not in the lung.
Our study is now on MedrXiv: Human serum from SARS-CoV-2 vaccinated and COVID-19 patients shows reduced binding to the RBD of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in comparison to the original Wuhan strain and the Beta and Delta variants medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
If you are sequencing Omicron (B.1.1.529) COVID genomes with the “Midnight” panel (e.g. using @nanopore) it looks like there might be one region that is dropping out, based on the sequences submitted to GISAID (N=68). Potential quick fix 🧵 (work with @osilander)
Took a look at the spike mutations in B.1.1.529 this evening, and colour coded them (details below)...there is...not much green.🧵
On June 26, 2000, the draft human genome sequence was announced. 21 years later, on May 27, 2021, the complete human genome sequence was published (as a preprint) biorxiv.org/content/10.110… Now we finally have a whole genome after talking about it for 2 decades @aphillippy et al👋👋
The internet seems to have figured out the 'best' and the 'worst' COVID-19 vaccines. Are you also making a decision based on the efficacy rates? Well, chances are that you have been misled. Here's why:
We've written a perspective on a new study by @MAMdayIndayOut that helps explain why some viruses (measles) don't evolve to escape immunity but others (influenza) do. Provides some clues relevant to future for #SARSCoV2 as well: cell.com/cell-reports-m… Here is a recap: (1/n)

Our new preprint where we show that SARS-CoV-2 VOCs are able to infect mice is out. Collaborative work @institutpasteur *not peer reviewed yet*, short 🧵 biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh… 1/9
If you want to spend a full hour of your life listening to me discuss #SARSCoV2 evolution tomorrow, details on my @HHMIJanelia seminar are below. If you're mildly interested but don't want to subject yourself to an hour of Zoom, here's a link to my slides slides.com/jbloom/interpr…

We preprinted our work showing loss of plasma neutralization of 501Y.V2 live virus variants. This has been a team effort by my lab at @AHRI_News & @krisp_news with @Tuliodna & @rjlessells @Sandile_Cele22 led from our side, very proud of his achievement ahri.org/wp-content/upl…
What accounts for the marked sex differences in how people respond to covid-19? No better than to hear from @taka_takehiro and @VirusesImmunity on this @ScienceMagazine science.sciencemag.org/content/371/65…
Preliminary data from South Africa suggests that the novel variant 501.V2 wasn't recognised by antibodies in 21/44 serum samples collected from people infected in the first wave - worth watching today's presentation for more info & caveats youtube.com/watch?v=Ja_tLG…
Further data on immune responses following the Pfizer mRNA vaccine against pseudo virus bearing Spike protein with mutations in the B.1.1.7 variant (del69/70, del 144/145, N501Y, A570D, P681H, T716I, S982A, D1118H). There is a modest reduction in efficacy of vaccine sera.
1/ Here's my review on adaptive immunity to COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2. I hope you find it useful. It was a lot of work. Thanks to Prof Alex Sette @SetteLab and others for direct contributions and broader input over the year! cell.com/cell/fulltext/… @CellCellPress
