Psychiatry is a container for some of the darkest aspects of humanity. People with severe intellectual disabilities abandoned by tired care takers. The homeless who cope with life’s horrors with drugs. Here, the pathology does not lie in the patient’s brain—but in society.

Good luck to everybody matching today!!! I remember the nerves and excitement and fear of this day like it was yesterday!! 🫶🏽

One of the very many reasons I let myself be misgendered daily on my surgery rotation back in 2017. I’m not proud about it, but I was just trying to get through it. Sad, but not surprised harassment like this continues today.

hear a story today that left my jaw hanging: medical student who goes by "they/them" pronouns, was laughed at after correcting a surgeon on their surgery rotation with their correct pronouns. this student was then mocked and berated for their remaining four weeks in the OR. ?!?

The STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS APPLICATIONS could open as soon as tomorrow! So here's a thread on how to tell if your loan actually qualifies and how to properly prepare for the application. 1/?

ppl always ask me if I had to go back and do it all again would I become a doctor and the answer is yes because now when ppl misgender me by calling me miss I can correct them by saying “actually it’s Dr.” and even a transphobe can’t deny that

An identity outside of medicine gives you freedom within medicine.

I'm a reproductive rights organizer & State Senate candidate. Last night, after speaking at our Roe rally, my Republican opponent – a police officer – violently attacked me. This is what it is to be a Black woman running for office. I won't give up.

People who've had uteruses removed can get pregnant but the only kind of pregnant they can get is a life-threatening kind called ectopic pregnancy. In case you didn't know.

I met an unhoused woman who has two years of disability payments sitting in a bank account she cannot access because she does not have an ID. After months we finally got her birth certificate and then she woke up to a sweep where all of her paperwork was thrown away.

this time has been so bittersweet …

Yesterday my partner moved away to prepare for starting residency in a new city. I’m so proud of him to start the next phase of his training, but also heartbroken that we will be apart for the next 4 years. It’s so sad that medicine can tear people apart like this… 1/2

Roe v. Wade is based on the 'right to privacy.' If the majority opinion by SCOTUS suggests that the constitution does not protect the right to privacy... that affects a WHOLE lot of other decisions. Buckle up - this is the beginning of a lot of potential ugliness. A thread.

So many lessons to learn from this anecdote, one of which is the importance of representation in medicine. If we want real progress towards health justice, we need to take down the barriers that have strategically kept members of marginalized communities out of medical practice

Dementia is not normal aging of the brain. It’s aging through neuroinflammation. That inflammation is being caused by damaging exposures— racism, crippling debt, air pollution, social oppression. We will not see different outcomes until we change the exposures.

NEW in @JAMA_current "Incidence of dementia per 1000 person-years was 14.2 for American Indian, 12.4 for Asian, 19.4 for Black, 20.7 for Hispanic & 11.5 for White participants. Adjusted hazard ratios were ⬆️ for Asian, Black & Hispanic participants." jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
