"The pawn... is almost insignificant to the outcome of the game; but when it is able to march on to the final rank, it undergoes transformation and becomes a queen - the most powerful piece on the chessboard. That's the story of every African child... it's the story of becoming."

Harsh Truth: Most people don’t want you to be successful. They might say they do, but the second you are more successful than them, they want to knock you back down. The signs are always clear: - The subtle digs - The twinge of resentment/envy - The comments to “be realistic”…

So Terry Apala says to trust nobody. I don't agree with him and incidentally that’s what I learned from this interview today. I trust people to disappoint, I trust people to be ungrateful, I trust people to be cold-hearted, to try and bite the fingers that fed them, to backbite…

When this Lingala song came out in the 80s, it was said that the Vatican was terribly disturbed and asked the Congo govt to ban it. Even if you don’t speak Lingala, the English sub-title is there to hint you why the hit song shook the (white sypremacist) world power

One of the gems I picked up in Kaduna. 1998 D. Phil thesis (Oxford) by Ruth Watson. Ibadan has always evoked this image of ‘trouble’ - ‘Ipata Boys Are Dangerous At Night’ i.e I.B.A.D.A.N etc (where Ipata = troublemaker) The city started out as a War Camp, btw, in 1829.
