Watched Martin Campbell's HBO TV movie called Cast a Deadly Spell, a 90s hard-boiled film noir pastiche set in an alternate dark fantasy occult-horror LA. Here's the scene of Fred Ward's Detective Phil Lovecraft stealing the Necronomicon from a gargoyle & kicking him in the nuts.
I like how this film was mainly just a generic kids book adaptation but than has a random scene where the main villian gets eaten alive by his own fears then jumps backs to being a generic kids movie.
