This particular figure about a sharp decline 11-14 is v significant. We *have* to know why & do something about it. Of course, smart phones & internet may play a part. But what else? A few ideas to follow.... 1. 1. Relentless focus on reading for 'academic' success & exams....1/

⚠️Reading enjoyment has fallen across all ages.⚠️ The sharpest decline is among pupils aged 11-14 - from 40.4% in 2023 to 30.7% in 2024. As children transition to secondary school, their reading engagement dips - a trend that is worsening. Learn more: literacytrust.org.uk/research-servi…

I used to often stress the importance of planning before students tackle lit questions, but rarely showed them what effective planning looks like. I now use my 3WS method under the visualiser to break down the question with students. dropbox.com/scl/fo/d8uktpu…

I’ve just made this to help students with AQA Lang, P1, Q3 & to stop them from over complicating their answers. Will trial next week. It might work, it might not but it’s worth experimenting to find out! Help yourselves to the sheet/format. @Team_English1 dropbox.com/s/8osq4qnb72iq…

Pulled out word rainbows as Y10 were struggling with the ‘why’. Linked quote word with end words by deciding on an evaluative verb that worked. The resultant paragraph is theirs: not perfect, but starting to make meaning and link to authorial intent. Baby steps but a great start.
