Just learned that James C. Scott, the author of "Seeing Like a State" and other massively influential works, has died at 87. There was no better advocate for the chaotic alignments.

Congratulations @tylersimko! So excited to hopefully work together soon

Proud of newly-minted Dr. Tyler Simko, who just successfully defended his dissertation, “Geographic Policy Evaluation in US State and Local Politics” — Hooray, @tylersimko!

Probably my favorite paper this year. I’ll be going back to it again and again

journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.108… I like this paper a lot. I've read it almost three times.

I have been waiting to feel this feeling for eighteen years. I didn’t know what it would feel like. It turns out it fucking rules.

This stark graph caught my attention..and since I am on a long layover, I wasted one hour looking at the underlying data. A short thread highlighting some danger of cohort-year-age regressions 1/

There's been a huge divergence in ideology among white men & women born after 1970. Avg. ideological self-placement among whites born b/w 1970 & 1975: ▪️4.1 for women ▪️4.1 for men Avg. ideological self-placement among whites born b/w 2000 & 2005: ▪️2.9 for women ▪️4.6 for men

Professors ARE judged every year on the merits. It's called an annual review. A huge problem is that most people have no idea what professor life is like and how difficult it is to get tenure and get promoted. There is a fantasy that we just sit on our laurels and make bank.

Why is tenure so sacrosanct? Can professors be judged on the merits year-by-year (or shorter) like all other professions? Or are the gatekeepers to the truth beyond criticism? It seems like the academy operates in a world of imagination at times
