Just learned that James C. Scott, the author of "Seeing Like a State" and other massively influential works, has died at 87. There was no better advocate for the chaotic alignments.
Congratulations @tylersimko! So excited to hopefully work together soon

Proud of newly-minted Dr. Tyler Simko, who just successfully defended his dissertation, “Geographic Policy Evaluation in US State and Local Politics” — Hooray, @tylersimko!
Probably my favorite paper this year. I’ll be going back to it again and again
journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.108… I like this paper a lot. I've read it almost three times.
I have been waiting to feel this feeling for eighteen years. I didn’t know what it would feel like. It turns out it fucking rules.

All the dorks celebrating here is the worst. It’s like every nerd at your high school is having their day.
"With the Torsboda investment, Sweden will be permanently abetting not only forced labor and human rights abuses in Xinjiang, but also China’s master plan to dominate those 'green' industries," says @Magnus_Fiskesjo thediplomat.com/2023/06/now-yo…
On May 31st, all Bosniaks in #Prijedor were ordered to mark their houses with white flags and to wear a white armbands in public by Serb authorities. Over 3,000 killed and the internment of 30,000 people in concentration camps and mass expulsions of over 50,000 people.…
This stark graph caught my attention..and since I am on a long layover, I wasted one hour looking at the underlying data. A short thread highlighting some danger of cohort-year-age regressions 1/

Relatives and survivors told us many in the re-education camps were sentenced to long terms in prison after impromptu court hearings. After spending 2 years in a re-education camp, Mamatjan’s brother Ahmetjan (left)was sentenced to 14 years in jail for possession of a banned book
Here's the📍of @VW's factory in the Uyghur region. The red dots are internment camps and detention centres. @Volkswagen has been operating in the middle of a genocide for half a decade.
Professors ARE judged every year on the merits. It's called an annual review. A huge problem is that most people have no idea what professor life is like and how difficult it is to get tenure and get promoted. There is a fantasy that we just sit on our laurels and make bank.
Why is tenure so sacrosanct? Can professors be judged on the merits year-by-year (or shorter) like all other professions? Or are the gatekeepers to the truth beyond criticism? It seems like the academy operates in a world of imagination at times
does state repression have long-term economic effects? if so, what are the mechanisms of persistence? my article “state terror and long-run development” is out at @apsrjournal and looks at these questions with a geography RD in cambodia cup.org/3LpBFQT
Feeling shame turns you into Spider-Man.
#Uyghur poet Tahir Hamut Izgil watched as his friends disappeared into China's camps. He knew his turn would come soon. Then he escaped. Now, in this searing, powerful, beautifully written memoir, Tahir shares his story with the world. My translation out Aug 1 fr @penguinpress
I'm a @UChicago international relations professor and I strongly disagree with John Mearsheimer's views on the War in Ukraine. Here's why. [Short THREAD]
