Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) is finally here ! ☄️✨I captured this image this morning at 09:22 UTC from @LCOAstro in Atacama desert in Chile 🇨🇱 The view was absolutely spectacular ! The clouds were constantly moving just above the horizon, but we got really lucky when the…

Today’s M4.7 earthquake near Malibu was located about 10 km from a M4.6 event in February. However, today’s quake was a strike slip event, whereas the earlier earthquake occurred on a reverse fault.

Research professors from our @Bureau3E's @ClasticsLab adapted an algorithm that's frequently used in voice recognition software to compare geological samples. Their results are raising questions about the earthquake record of Cascadia. jsg.utexas.edu/news/2024/08/a…

My first pano from last night, of the aurora arc that was visible even as the orange twilight was still hanging on along the low horizon. I reckon the arc was covering around 100 degrees from west to east - far too big to fit into a single shot!

Just wanted to let you all know that there is a new influx, and large returning group, of geoscientists now on Bluesky and I encourage everyone to try it out (again). Keep in mind that there is no algorithm, but there are lists of great people to follow based on interests.
With several recent widely felt earthquakes in California, there is a surge in interest in early warning messages. This article is a good summary and describes what to do to receive these messages (the MyShake app is my favorite) latimes.com/california/sto…

To clarify the location of today’s M4.4 earthquake relative to the Puente Hills Thrust system, here are some figures from Shaw et al. (2002) with an approx quake location marked with orange splotch. If the depth of 11km is correct, this is an OK fit with the Los Angeles segment.

Seismicity map of the M4.4 reverse faulting #earthquake in South Pasadena at a depth of 12 km. One potential candidate fault is the Puente Hills Thrust system.

37 hours after earning a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters (and six days after bronze in the 5,000), the Netherlands' Sifan Hassan wins the 2024 Olympic marathon over a field of legends in an Olympic record of 2:22:55. One of the all-time great Olympic distance running feats.
