A new post with first thoughts about the implications of Trump’s victory for US foreign policy. Looks at NATO, the Middle East, and Indo-Pacific. Is the US still the ‘indispensable nation’? samf.substack.com/p/what-does-tr…

This feels like a decisive victory for Trumpism. But if he raises tariffs to the extent promised - and goes for mass deportation - he could crash the economy quite quickly. So the Democrats comeback could happen sooner than you think.

The WTO has a new tool allowing us to see trade concerns raised in meetings more clearly. It will be useful for delegates, officials in capitals, traders, activists, academics and anyone else interested. @BobWolfeSPS has taken a look. bsky.app/profile/coppet…

If tariffs bring a lot of manufacturing back to the US, that means way less imports and so they are not raising much tax revenue. 🔁 If tariffs are raising a lot of revenue, then high levels of imports persist and they are not bringing manufacturing back to the US.

Agree Tai would be an excellent pick— for an incoming Trump administration.

SCOOP from @tradereporter: AFL-CIO favors Tai staying at USTR if Harris wins It’s not unprecedented for a cabinet official to serve under two different presidents. subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2024/1…

My interview on the Mercosur FTA in today’s L’Opinion (France) against the backdrop of renewed farm protests. I argue that the problem France has with the deal goes well beyond Mercosur. It’s a questioning of open trade and internationalism.

That's quite an accusation... Would be quite shocked if they shared classified information. These are two of the most cautious public servants out there. Would be wildly out of character.

Dare I say that there is a certain predictability to @RanaForoohar’s articles on trade. Like they will have references to the end of laissez faire globalisation in the 1st para and then construct a mythical age of evil unfettered free trade to attack… digitaleditionapp.ft.com/i9DX?pid=af_ap…

Since the Nobel prize, there has been extensive engagement with Acemoglu, Johnson & Robinson (AJR). As I teach international economic law & development, I thought I’d try to fill in the discussion with how legal scholars evaluated how and what institutions matter for development.
