"Autistic and non-autistic adolescents report similar overall empathy levels" but "parents of autistic adolescents perceived them as having overall lower levels of empathy" onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/au… "findings do not support previous views of autistic people as having less empathy"

People will be shocked to hear that 40% of parent carers have thought about killing themselves. This is a result of battling constantly with a system that has little interest in supporting them or their disabled children. birmingham.ac.uk/news/2024/more… via @unibirmingham

Just in case anyone was optimistic that views on children not attending school were changing take a look at this socially illiterate, tone deaf headline in the Sunday Times. Disgraceful.

New paper on sensory processing differences in autistic & non-autistic ppl in middle age+. Sensory issues were more common in autistic ppl, especially autistic women. For autistics they related to worse mental health, and more often than in non-autistic ppl intensified over time.

Our new paper on sensory processing differences in autistic/non-autistic folk in midlife and older age is now out in @AutismAdulthood, with the wonderful Yixin Chen + Christine Jenkins (@AutisticMatters), & @WillClinPsy, @GoldAgeLabUK, @HappeLab Info ⬇️ liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/au…

How does ABA get away with constant violations of autistic children's bodily and other autonomy? Forced play, hugs and tickles from a stranger. Of course there is parental consent, but where is the consent from the child? Now imagine doing something like this with adults.

"In hospital or daily life contexts, studies essentially showed idiosyncratic expressions, hypervigilance, motor agitation, negative emotional reactions or vocalizations." Pain is often expressed atypically by individuals with #autism. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38971646/ via @PaulWhiteleyPhD

Friendly reminder that armchair diagnoses of public figures are unethical and a form of pseudoscience. They also exhibit a fundamental misunderstanding of the diagnostic process, its complexity and nuance, and the core role of differential diagnosis.

ABA in 2024: behavior analysts use a lot of punishment, for hand mouthing in a young autistic child link.springer.com/article/10.100… e.g. RIRD, finding mittens aversive to the child & forcing her to wear them, response blocking, threat of punishment (presence of mittens "never faded") etc

Am I reading this article correctly, that profound autism will now be "defined as needing support with activities of daily living", which is right back to where we started by focusing on support needs?? thetransmitter.org/spectrum/pinni…
